Pocketful of Stars Birthday Pop-up Card

Things are feeling a bit crispy here, after a couple of 25-28*C days. We even opened up the swimming pool!  We’re trying to make the most of it this summer, since we most likely won’t still be living here next year. We also went to 2 different BBQs.  You definitely have to celebrate the sunny days around here!

Lila has started to say “night night” and “bye bye,” both of which I find suuuuper adorable, especially with the little hand wave that accompanies them. Segue to this card (see what I did there? Awesome segue!).. A fun pop-up card with bright cheerful stars.  This one works for guys too, based on the colours and lack of butterflies or flowers.

For the spiral: punch out a 1 3/4” circle and cut it into a spiral. Stick down the middle and end to the inside of your card.

Materials:
Island Indigo, Whisper White, Calypso Coral, and Summer Starfruit Cardstocks.
Island Indigo, Calypso Coral, and Summer Starfruit Inks.
Merry Minis Stamp Set.
1 3/4” circle punch, Merry Minis star punch, and Petite Curly Label Punch.
Big Shot and Chevron Folder.

Thanks Collage Card

I’ve got my cast off and am ready for new things! It was rough at first, but after a few days I’m getting more confident with using my right hand. I’ve got lots of wrist exercises to do every day, which is super tedious. I never like that kind of thing, but I need to get back some range of motion.

I haven’t really been able to stay active with the cast on, but I have been doing a squat challenge – more squats every day for 30 days.  It’s going well! I’ve got 160 squats to do today, and feel up to the challenge, even though it’s tough. I also did my first real workout in 6 weeks – a short walk/run combo. It’s time for some good momentum to start.

Here’s a fun collage card I put together.  I just love this set and how easy it is to make a fun card with it. And isn’t that lace tape beautiful? So easy to use!

Materials:
Basic Gray, S0 Saffron, Melon Mambo, and Whisper White cardstocks.
Basic Gray, Melon Mambo, and VersaMark Inks.
Oh, Hello! stamp set.
Big Shot and Apothecary Accents die.
Delicate Details Lace Tape.

Get Well Pop-Up Tissue Card

It’s been an eventful few days.  Nathan and I got to sneak away by ourselves to Vancouver overnight, where we watched a Canucks’ game and got to go out for breakfast.  Miss Bean stayed with her aunt and grandparents, and surely had tons of fun.

I’m getting my cast off tomorrow.  My fingers and everything else are crossed in hopes that I don’t need a new cast.  I’m done with all this restricted movement and arm use.  It’d be nice to shower without a bag over my arm! It’d also be nice to be able to make some new cards.  Thankfully I still have a few to share!

This card idea I got from a friend who shared the pop-up tissue box design at a Stampin’ Up! demonstrator meeting we had.  Clever, right?

Materials:
Whisper White, Calypso Coral, Daffodil Delight, and Lucky Limeade cardstocks. Calypso Coral DSP.
Basic Black ink. Teeny Tiny Wishes stamp set.
1 3/8” circle punch, 1 3/4” Scallop Circle punch, mini Punch Pack.
Big Shot and Labels Collection Framelits die.

When you can’t write, type. Or stamp.

IMG_1844

As I’ve mentioned, writing is currently next to impossible for me, unless I’m ok with a snail’s pace scrawl that ends up resembling a child’s messy handiwork. Usually that’s not good enough! Thankfully computers and cell phones have made electronic communication super easy, and I’ve even found uses where stamping comes in and saves the day.

I’m able to – slowly – send off texts, tweets, and facebook posts left-handed on both my phone and laptop. Unfortunately, my thoughts don’t stick with me very well when the typing speed is so much slower. I seem to lose track of my thoughts, or the wording I was hoping to use, but at least the job gets done.

I’ve come across a few things where typing wasn’t going to be an option, but I still wanted the product to look clean and professional, not like it came from my aforementioned inner grade-schooler. One such case was labelling my stamp orders for customers. I couldn’t scrawl their names all ugly-like! Enter alphabet stamps and some crisp black ink.

I punched out a curly label shape from some DSP and stamped on my customers’ initials. Voilà – a simple and elegant way to show whose order is whose.

Chalkboard Leaf

Hello, hello!

I’m still broken, and feeling el-blah.  A sore neck thrown into the mix never helps… But! The wrist doesn’t hurt much anymore! I actually made dinner yesterday, wielding my knife like a machete. Those yams didn’t stand a chance! We now have a fridge full of sweet potato and lentil chicken curry.

Here’s a card I had saved to share with you.  It’s super easy to make, and uses a lot of retired/past items, including that stamp set and the DSP.  I’ve used a fun chalkboard technique.  This one was stamped in white craft ink, then embossed in clear.  You could definitely skip the embossing step; it’s unnecessary, but provides a bit of shine.

Rub on some white chalk, or sponge on some more whit ink, and you’re done!

Hello, you! As promised, I have a card to share. This fun pop-up card is from a recent class. I’ve used stamps from Sale-a-bration, so hopefully you got your free set and can recreate this card. It’s all about the layering, and the sophisticated colours. Very London-esque.

The class was all about pop-up cards, so I chose to use a very simple technique here, where a little piece of the inner layer of the card is snipped and folded outwards.

Cherry Cobbler and Basic Gray Inks.
Oh, Hello and Feeling Sentimental Stamp Sets.

Managing With One Arm: Blogging

IMG_1841

Blogging with the use of only one arm has a whole set of challenges to overcome.  How do you manage typing? Taking pictures is necessary but difficult, creating content is next to impossible, and creativity seems elusive.  I’ve been facing these problems and exploring different methods of dealing with them.

There’s one solution that is key to all the new obstacles I’m facing with the use of only one arm. Keep. It. Simple.  Look for the simplest way to do everything.  This will probably mean you need to make some changes and do things differently than you’re used to.  It’ll also mean that things just won’t be as polished as you’re used to, but that’s ok!  Also, it’s going to take a lot longer to put together a blog post than ever before, even with all the cut corners.

IMG_1839

The first thing I realised was that I couldn’t use my camera anymore.  There’s just no way to hold it steady and use any of the functionality, let alone snap a picture with just one hand.  I’m now relying heavily on my old iPhone, without any bells and whistles.  I haven’t even had the energy to use any fun editing apps. The photos I’m getting are super basic, but I don’t think anyone cares! All I’ve done is point, click, and crop.  Super simple, and definitely doable with one hand.

Typing takes a bit more effort, and I haven’t found any great miracle workers there.  You mostly need to have patience and a good spellchecker.  You’ll definitely press all sorts of wrong keys, or revert to cellphone typing, expecting the computer to autocorrect for you.  No such luck. Windows Live Writer is the blogging software that I’ve always used, and it seems to get the job done!  I’ve found that I get a bit of a sore shoulder from having one hand use both sides of the keyboard, so it’s good to take little breaks every 10 minutes or so.

IMG_1845

I’ve realised that creating new content in my usual way just isn’t going to happen.  For a crafting/stamping blob, this is kind of an issue, don’t you think?  There’s no way ! can make any projects worth sharing, using my left hand. Thankfully I’ve got a few things in my stash saved up for just such an occasion, so I’ll have some pretty things to share with you.  Alternative? Use it as an occasion to switch up your blog topic.

The final issue of lost creativity is more difficult to tackle. It stems from a jumble of causes all piled together. Life is physically difficult, everything seems to take a lot of extra time as well as extra mental energy, and there’s the annoying pain that goes along with the injury. When you add this together, it seems to leach away any creativity that an imaginative person has.

For the creativity-deadened mind, I suggest giving yourself a break.  Watch some TV, have a nice long bath, get extra sleep, treat yourself to a little pedicure… Then start to look for new inspiration.  Pinterest is an amazing wealth of ideas, but is often overwhelming. I’ve got my boards super organized and I only follow a very small handful of users, which seems to help.

Reading other blogs is a great way to jumpstart creativity.  It helps to see what trends are happening in areas that interest you.  Subscribe to the RSS feeds of blogs you love, and use a reader app on your phone.  One reader I’m currently digging is Feedly.  It’s easy and shows me everything I want to catch up on.

For any stampers or scrapbookers looking for ways to continue creating when working with paper is no longer an option, Stampin’ Up! has a great digital tool: My Digital Studio. You can try it for a month FREE, and then purchase the software for only $24.95.  It’s great, and I really need to get back into using it more… But I’m still at the Pinterest step of my creativity rehab ;-)

Hopefully those suggestions help!  Next up is how I’m dealing with having a business one-handed.

Managing With One Arm: A story

IMG_1848

I posted last week that I had broken my wrist, and now that I’m slowly emerging from the fog of pain I want to do a little blog series about coping with the use of only one arm (the non-dominant one), as it applies to my life right now as a mom, crafter, teacher, wife, and blogger.

First, I owe you the story of how I broke myself.  It was definitely not one of my best moments, but we all have to make stupid mistakes sometimes, right?  Well, there’s not much excitement to this story.  I wasn’t sky diving, nor even playing hockey or ultimate.  I was, however, engaged in the ultra dangerous activity of throwing a frisbee with Nathan in our front yard.

The frisbee flew down to the sidewalk below and I figured I could just hop down from our rock wall to fetch it.  I jumped on over, and the 5 1/2 foot drop ended with a very hard landing.  I overbalanced to my right side and put out my hand to steady myself on the pavement.  Snap! I knew instantly it was broken. The rest of the night involved the hospital, morphine, and bone setting. I don’t recommend any of this!

Over the course of the last week I’ve slowly healed to the point where I can finally concentrate on more than just the television, and I can half-heartedly wiggle some of my fingers again. I’ve had to adjust to new ways of living my life and completing daily tasks that I used to take for granted as being simple. Not everything is possible to do by oneself one-handed! I’ve had incredible support from everyone around me – family, friends, and Nathan.  Nathan has had to basically take on the role of single dad, and he’s doing a pretty great job!

Stay tuned as I bring up topics about coping with one hand, such as blogging, running a business, cooking, exercising, maintaining relationships, and taking care of a baby.

Broken

Well friends,

Unfortunately on Monday night i broke my right wrist.  Even typing seems like an insurmountable mountain to climb each time I attempt it.  Needless to say, there won’t be much crafting happening in the next while, but I should be able to wrangle a post together for you next week.

For now I will try to get some rest and heal.

Chalkboard Butterfly Card

Hiya,

I’m making veggie stock from scratch.  It’s really easy; it nearly makes itself!  I just kept bits of onion, veggies that weren’t being used up, etc., and froze them until I’d have time to boil them in some water along with peppercorns, some cilantro and bay leaves.  That’s it, that’s all, that’s everything.  A freezer all stocked up (ahem.. I hate puns.. pretend I didn’t make that one). We’re ready for some soup here!

Also, I got my first baby-free night since having L.  My sister-in-law had baby duties while Nathan and I went out to dinner and stayed at a hotel.  It was nice not to have any responsibilities!  I think, however, that we slept worse than we do at home due to a different schedule, different pillows, etc.  I really should take my pillow with me, even to hotels!

Check out this card I did at a recent chalkboard techniques class:  The beautiful swallowtail butterfly embossed in white on black paper, with some added chalk smudges.  I’ve been seeing this whole chalkboard style everywhere lately, and it’s super easy!

Materials:
Whisper White, Basic Black, and Island Indigo cardstocks.
Versamark Ink with Whisper White embossing powder.
Swallowtail and Happiest Birthday Wishes stamps.
Stampin’ Dimensionals and white chalk.

Easy Party Glasses with Washi Labels

Hey there!

I’m finally remembering to share this quick little “project” I did for L’s 1st birthday.  I had these fun paper straws that I impulsively purchased online a few years ago, so I wanted a way to use them.  I got myself a few dozen 500mL mason jars as my “glasses,” and then needed a label.

I found some brightly coloured washi tape (it’s essentially pretty masking tape) to add a name to each jar.  I let guests jot down their own name with a marker.  Easy, peasy!

Happy Birthday Posies

Hi there,

I had an exciting weekend!  I headed up island to join in on a local Stampin’ Up! Demonstrator meeting.  We discussed some fun new product lines. My Paper Pumpkin is so cool – it’s a monthly secret subscription box of unknown crafting goodies – everything you need to make a cute project, and it’s different every month.. Seriously, check it out!  It’s perfect for the crafter who doesn’t want to buy too much, or who loves a surprise treat each month.

We also did some swaps and make-and-takes.  I got so many new ideas; I can’t wait to share them with you soon!  I just love getting new inspiration.  It’s so energizing!

For now, here’s a card I made using some new products.  You only have a few more weeks to earn that cute ribbon for free!

Materials:
Whisper White, Pool Party, and Tangerine Tango Cardstock.
Tangerine Tango, Basic Black, and Melon Mambo Inks.
Bright Blossoms, and Create a Cupcake Stamp Sets.
Modern Label, 3/4” circle, and Word Window Punches.
Big Shot and Honeycomb Folder, and Delicate Doilies Sizzlits Dies.
Tangerine Tango Ribbon (Sale-a-bration), and gemstones.

Hello Rain Card

Yes, hello you! Hello rain!  Hello cold that thought it should also visit!

I’ve been drinking mug after mug of lemon, ginger, and honey tea.  We really need to stock up on all three, as I’ve completely depleted our stores.  I’m not sure if it’s actually helping, but my fingers are crossed.  So far, little bean’s avoided this one (knock on wood?).

We had yet another fun weekend filled with parties.  Saturday was a nice little tea party that some friends put on for L’s 1st birthday.  There were delicious crust-less sandwiches, lots of tea, and a giant tower of assorted sweet treats (French macarons, almond tarts, etc).  I was in heaven!  L even got to eat a delicious carrot birthday muffin.

This card… I really enjoyed making it!  I was inspired by the latest catalogue, but went my own way with it a bit.  Don’t you love that honeycomb embossing die?

Materials:
Summer Starfruit and Whisper White cardstock.  Print Poetry DSP Stack.
Summer Starfruit, Midnight Muse, and Baja Breeze Inks.
Million Dollar Moments hostess stamp set,
Ovals Framelits Dies, Honeycomb textured impressions folder, and the Big Shot.

Sanded Honeycomb Card with Butterflies

Heyya,

Things in the Duckie house are good, although L has learned to really do a great temper tantrum so suddenly that I never know what the problem is.  Two spoons? You only want one? On NO! You NEED two spoons again!  How dare this mom try to fix the problem!  It’s all about being a one year old, right?  Ha.. I’m sure I’ve got it easy, and it’ll be so much different when we get to the twos.

L and I mostly celebrated Family Day (a new holiday here in BC) together.  She got to play with all her new birthday toys, and let me tell you, she’s loving them!  She’s currently puttering around my ankles carrying a cylinder block with her.  Nathan slept until 2-something! (Yes, for real.. although, to be fair, he worked until 4:30am).  We attempted watching our first movie together as a family.  I think we got about 2/3 through it before having to pause for the night.  Not bad, considering all the interruptions by miss L!

I hope you had a great day too, Family Day, or otherwise.

Materials:
Whisper White cardstock and Primrose Petals Coordinations cardstock.
Primrose Petals and Pool Party Inks.
Bloomin Marvelous Stamp set.
Pool Party Ribbon (from Sale-a-Bration), and Linen Thread.
Bitty Butterfly and Word Window Punches.
Big Shot and Honeycomb folder.  Rhinestone Jewels.

Little Thank You Birdies Card

Hello, hello!

I’ve been getting ready for little miss L-Bean to turn 1 tomorrow, and the party that goes with it.  Some decorations are up, mason jars are ready for Italian soda, and the pulled and cupcakes are made.  I can take a few minutes to relax before trying to get some sleep!

It’s been a pretty neat year for us.  I learned how to go through the days without work, spending fun as well as difficult times with L.  It’s been so cool seeing her learn new things.  Her vocabulary is growing constantly, and she’s full of fun.  Tonight she was bouncing all over the place and babbling up a storm, as well as the usual “mama, dada, hello, etc.” I can’t wait for whatever comes next!

Thanks for reading throughout this year of crazy!  I’ve made you a thank you card :-)

Materials:
Whisper White, Pool Party, Crumb Cake, and Rich Razzleberry cardstock. Sycamore St. DSP.
Rich Razzleberry and Summer Starfruit inks.
Made For You and Flock Together Stamp Sets.
1  3/4” Circle Punch, and 2 3/8” Scallop Circle Punch.
Big Shot and Fancy Fan Folder.
